More than a market

There is something wonderfully simple about a farmers’ market. Good food, grown or made by people who care about what they produce, sold directly to the people who are going to enjoy it.

Cowbridge Farmers’ Market has been bringing local producers and shoppers together since 2000. Formerly known as Vale Farmers’ Market, we are proud to continue a tradition that has always been about much more than simply filling a shopping bag.

A market is a place to meet. To talk. To discover what’s in season, try something new and ask the person behind the stall exactly where something came from or how it was made. It’s a chance to know a little more about the food on your table — and the people, farms and small businesses behind it.

Local food. Local people.

Buying locally keeps more of what we spend within our communities and supports independent farmers, growers, bakers, makers and food producers here in the Vale and surrounding area.

It can mean fewer miles between producer and plate, less unnecessary packaging and a closer connection with the seasons. Most importantly, it keeps skills, businesses and livelihoods alive.

At Cowbridge Farmers’ Market, you’re not buying from a faceless supply chain. You can meet the person who reared the meat, baked the bread, grew the vegetables or made what’s on the stall in front of you.

And they’ll usually be very happy to tell you all about it.

A market town for more than 750 years

Holding a farmers’ market in Cowbridge feels particularly appropriate.

Markets have been part of the life of the town for centuries. Cowbridge received its first borough charter in 1254 and grew as an important market and trading centre for the surrounding agricultural communities of the Vale of Glamorgan. For generations, farmers, craftspeople, traders and townspeople came together here to buy, sell, exchange news and meet their neighbours.

More than 750 years later, the surroundings may have changed, but the idea hasn’t changed all that much.

Every Saturday morning, producers arrive with food and goods they’ve grown, reared, baked, brewed or made. People stop for a chat, familiar faces meet again, and somebody inevitably goes home with rather more than they intended to buy.

That’s what a good market should be.

Come along, meet our producers and be part of a very old Cowbridge tradition.
